VTA's two world firsts have set new standards in sewage sludge dewatering, making its use and disposal much more cost-effective.

The thermal utilisation of municipal wastewater sludge is steadily increasing. For example, in Bavaria, nearly two-thirds of the sludge produced is currently incinerated. Just last year, the limit values for land application in Germany were tightened further, and the phasing out of agricultural use was brought to the agenda. VTA offers an impressive solution to make sludge disposal more economical for sewage treatment plant operators with a completely new approach. Leveraging their many years of experience in ultrasonic technology and patented counter-current disintegration (GSD), VTA experts have developed another innovation after three years of research and development: the VTA mudinator®.

Polymer can provide a better effect

Ultrasound is also used in this process to treat the sludge. Unlike fragmentation, the frequencies are different and the energy used is lower, so the cell structures in the sludge are not broken down. However, the sludge structure is modified to provide an optimum load balance with the polymer added later. The resulting flocs are more resistant to shearing and improve sludge dewatering. Conditioning in the VTA mudinator® takes place immediately before the polymer is added. This allows the polymer to be used much more effectively.

A powerful combination

VTA mudinator® becomes particularly powerful when combined with the new high-performance VTA Biocitran®, which has been specially developed to improve sludge dewatering. Based on an innovative development, this product provides higher dewatering capacity, better floc stability and noticeably clearer slurry thanks to selected additives.

Enormous savings potential

As a result, dry matter increases by up to 5% and backwashing at the plant is reduced. Polymer consumption can be reduced by up to 30%. Finally, the new technology also saves on transport costs for sludge use or disposal, as the amount of water that needs to be transported ‘everywhere’ is significantly reduced. VTA mudinator® can be used in all treatment plants where sludge is dewatered. Even in a medium-sized plant, annual savings of several hundred thousand euros can generally be expected.
